International Scholarship Program

When the deadline for applications to the International Scholarship Program passed on 2 February 2004, more than 9,800 applications had been received. It is fascinating to see that people from literally all corners of the world (hello applicants from Tonga, Afghanistan and Lesotho!) are interested in the XV International AIDS Conference and hope to participate with the help of a scholarship.

We, the Scholarship Unit, have been working hard on reviewing the applications. The selection criteria and the guidelines on the regional and category breakdown of the scholarships have been determined by a Scholarship Working Group (SWG). The SWG is composed of 10 members who hold comprehensive knowledge, skills and expertise in the field of HIV/AIDS, and concurrently they represent a balance of different geographical regions. The recommendations of the SWG are presented to the Conference Organising Committee for approval.

The selection process was completed at mid April, and all applicants has been notified by email about the outcome of their application. People who are awarded a scholarship will receive a confirmation letter with more information about the steps to be taken before the Conference.

Although we had wished that many more scholarships could be granted, as always, funds are restricted. Approximately 1,000 applicants will be awarded a full or partial scholarship from the International Scholarship Program. Since many applications to the International Scholarship Program will be rejected, we strongly encourage people to try to seek funding from other sources.

We in the Scholarship Unit want to take this opportunity to thank all applicants for the interest in the International Scholarship Program and in the XV International AIDS Conference.
