Community Project
Decades of fighting the epidemic have demonstrated that the best efforts of scientists and researchers are not sufficient but must be augmented by the varied voices and perspectives from the infected and affected communities. These voices have become stronger and more focused because of the International AIDS Conferences and will be heard even more loudly at AIDS 2004 in Bangkok. The people closest to the epidemic teach important lessons on living with HIV, AIDS care and HIV prevention.
In the spirit of the Unified Program, communities and PHAs have worked within the Conference organising process at every level, to ensure that critical issues for communities are included in the Conference Program, and that Conference arrangements meet the needs of community delegates. As part of this effort, the CPC Secretariat has developed specific “community projects” which are described below. These Community Projects will ensure broad participation in the Conference, promote formal and informal learning by community delegates, and ensure that lessons learned directly benefit communities throughout the world where they are most needed.
1. Community Gathering
The Community Gathering at the XV International AIDS Conference on Sunday 11 July is a half-day forum and the first meeting point for community delegates from all over the world. This event will set the scene for community involvement in the Conference and build solidarity across a range of community networks spanning the globe. The Gathering begins with a welcome lunch, followed by reports from the regional HIV/AIDS conferences and an orientation to the Conference and the many community projects within it. It continues with break-out sessions for networks and interest groups to plan their role in the Conference. The Community Gathering will close in time for delegates to join the Opening Ceremony. The Gathering will demonstrate the power of community to shape the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and allow community delegates to plan how to maximize their contribution to the Conference.

2. Empowering Visits Program, part of the AIDS 2547 Community Impact Project
A diverse range of outreach activities was organised over many months to draw communities into the Conference and bring the Conference to communities. During and after the Conference, this project continues with an Empowering Visits Program and activities to strengthen regional (Mekong) networks concerned with issues such as access to treatment, care and support, and cross-border cooperation. 3. Global Village - Learning from Those Who Live It
For the first time, the Conference will be accessible to non-delegates through the Global Village, providing learning opportunities for anyone concerned and involved in the community response to AIDS. Delegates will be able to interact with their local counterparts to share experiences, celebrate diversity, share solidarity and compassion, discuss ideas, pass on perspectives and establish new networks for learning. Activities in the Global Village include community meetings and forums, exhibitions, cultural performances, health foods and herbal markets, and services such as massage and traditional healing. Relaxing space is provided in ‘networking bars’ run by different community groups, and this is also the place to buy your souvenirs of Thai handicrafts and products that support community groups and people living with HIV. We invite all delegates to help us plan for and join a huge international Advocacy Parade through the streets of Bangkok on the evening of Wednesday 14 July.

4. PHA Lounge
Informal discussions held with fellow delegates from all over the world, outside of the scheduled program sessions, are often the most valuable part of the conference experience. Community spaces such as a PHA lounge are conducive, and often essential, for these important interactions.
The PHA Lounge is designed to be a place of rest where delegates who are living with HIV can find relief from the stress of the hectic conference and enjoy peer support. The Lounge provides a calm and nurturing environment, with complementary refreshments, spaces for informal discussion and for quiet relaxation as well as private facilities for taking medication staffed by trained personnel.
The PHA Lounge is managed by the Thai Network for People Living with HIV/AIDS (TNP+) and provides nutritious Thai, Thai-Muslim, and ‘Western’ foods, Thai therapeutic massage and a warm welcome to HIV positive delegates from all over the world.

5. SILABHA Art and Cultural Program
The Cultural Program is an embedded and interactive part of the Conference. Individual artists, community art groups, theatres and musicians have been invited to take part in the Conference. A special feature of SILABHA Art and Cultural Program will be a cultural exchange between Africa and Asia with a focus on celebrating both diversity and shared expressions.
Exhibitions of artworks and art projects exist throughout the Conference venue in addition to key sites in the city. Performances and interactive shows will be taking place in hallways, exhibition areas as well as on stages in various community spaces. A quiet ‘remembrance space’, artistically created for delegates to visit at any time during the Conference, recalls those lost in the struggle against AIDS and celebrates their lives. Quilt panels are also featured.

6. Activities for Youth
Activities for Youth promote the importance of youth issues and bring youth to the Conference to have their voices heard and contribute their perspective on the key issues of Access for All. Sessions dedicated for youth begin with a Youth Forum on Sunday 11 July, and continue throughout the week as part of the unified Conference program. These sessions, along with youth activities in the Global Village, will facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences among youth and lay the foundations of a global youth network that is connected to world HIV/AIDS communities.
