Updated Conference Communication about Avian Influenza
July 7, 2004
Updated Conference Communication about Avian Influenza (“Bird Flu”) and its implications for the XV International AIDS Conference Bangkok, Thailand (11-16 July 2004)
Following news of a confirmed Avian Influenza outbreak in poultry in Thailand, we would like to reassure Conference participants that there is no need for alarm. This outbreak is confined to poultry. No new human cases of Avian Influenza have been seen and there is virtually no risk of people contracting Avian Influenza without direct contact with live poultry. The Thai Ministry of Public Health has taken immediate measures to control the outbreak. The latest statement from WHO (World Health Organization) is: “To date, no evidence suggests that human-to-human transmission has occurred anywhere in the World.”
We do not believe that participation in the Conference poses a health risk to any of its delegates, and there are no plans to move or postpone the XV International AIDS Conference. However, we advise delegates to avoid direct contact with live poultry while in Thailand.
