Updated Conference Communication about Avian Influenza

Updated Conference Communication about Avian Influenza (“Bird Flu”) and its Implications for the XV International AIDS Conference Bangkok, Thailand (11-16 July 2004)

Though the Conference is still more than four months away, we would like to inform current and potential conference participants that organisers are continuing to monitor closely the few recent cases of Avian Influenza (“bird flu”) in humans, which have occurred in Thailand and several other Asian countries. The latest statement from WHO (World Health Organization) is: “To date, no evidence suggests that human-to-human transmission has occurred in Thailand.” We are in regular communication with officials at WHO, as well as the Conference’s local host, the Thai Ministry of Public Health.

We do not believe that participation in the conference poses a health risk, and there are no plans to move or postpone the XV International AIDS Conference. We will continue to monitor the situation to evaluate any changes and will update this page regularly.

For more information on Avian Influenza, please visit WHO’s website at: http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/en/

As planning for the Conference continues, organisers are excited to report an unprecedented response to a recent call for abstracts. Given the record high number of submissions (10,000), we are confident that the final program will provide valuable and timely information on the state of the pandemic, as well as efforts to advance the theme of this year’s Conference, Access for All.
