Welcome to Thailand, Bangkok and Nonthaburi

The Kingdom of Thailand
Thailand possesses a wealth of architecture, culture, cuisine and traditions that are each distinctively Thai. Moreover, with their natural charm, hospitality and relaxed temperament, Thais are supremely adept at making visitors feel right at home.
Thailand is located in the heart of Southeast Asia and is shaped like an elephant’s head. The profile faces Myanmar (Burma), the ears border Laos and Cambodia, and the trunk extends southwards between the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand towards Malaysia.

Thailands beautiful landscape has much to interest overseas visitors, from the mountainous North to the fertile Central Plains and Southern Peninsula with its tropical beaches and offshore islands. It is a land steeped in culture and tradition. Bangkok, the capital, is known locally as the City of Angels. It is an intoxicating blend of the old and the new, where ancient temples rub shoulders with modern tower blocks. Life is noisy and fast moving and the streets are often busy. But in the midst of this hectic, modern city, you can find a sense of history and timelessness in which the Thai people, whose friendliness and hospitality are legendary, have managed to take on the modern world while preserving their unique cultural heritage.

Bangkok
The ‘City of Angels’, Bangkok, or Krungthep as it is known in Thai, is situated on the historically renowned ‘River of Kings’, the Chao Phraya River. When flying into this vast metropolis of approximately ten million people, one sees a very modernised lifestyle with towering multi-storey high-rises, but once on the ground, the hidden mystique of this oriental city is revealed.

Among the small alleyways that run off the major thoroughfares and the maze of canals that criss-cross the city are aspects of life that are truly and uniquely Thai. Temples of various architectural styles built by the Chakri monarchs, food markets that are hustling and bustling with hawkers selling their wares, the Chao Phraya River – lifeline of the city and country, with crafts of all sizes, carrying people in all directions – are entwined with modernity to create Bangkok. Take a walk or a river cruise to see and experience the cultural, traditional and historical charms that attract people from all over the world to the ‘City of Angels’.

Nonthaburi
The main venue for the XV International AIDS Conference is IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, Nonthaburi. Nonthaburi is just northwest of Bangkok. Nonthaburi and Bangkok are almost the same city with the convenient mass transit system. Whatever one is looking for, it is sure to be found in Bangkok or Nonthaburi, two cities with treasures for the pleasures of the world.
