Activities for Youth
Young people are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection and frequently carry the burden of caring for family members living with HIV/AIDS. Lack of access to HIV information and prevention services and a host of social and economic reasons contribute to their high risk. Stigma and discrimination can be particularly damaging to young people at a time when they are trying to consolidate their identity and establish their place in the world.
Activities for Youth will ensure that disadvantaged youth become an integrated and integral part of the XV International AIDS Conference proceedings. The activities will advocate for youth issues in all areas of the conference. AIDS 2004 will be the year that youth have their voices heard and actively contribute to the both today’s and tomorrow’s agenda.
A youth forum, conducted before the Conference begins and presented in association with the UN Integrated Regional Information Network and YouthNet, will bring together local and international young people to learn how to maximize their conference experience as well as review the current impact of AIDS on the young people of the world.
The objectives of the project include:
a) To create permanent arena for youth in the conference that will continue into the future.
b) To address the problems of youth infected and affected by HIV by helping youth find their own solutions.
c) To help youth exchange ideas and experiences in order to learn and share with others.
d) To develop a global youth network that is connected to world AIDS communities.
e) To cultivate and train youth leaders in the fight against HIV.
f) To bring 300 youth leaders from the region and around the world to the conference.
Depending on our fundraising and organizing efforts, Youth Activities will include:
1. Global Village Youth Space: 400 square meters inside the global village for youth networking and activities such as workshops, plays, small meeting space and exhibition presenting the networks and organisations, conference update sessions or anything that youth imagination would lead the way.
2. Cultural Program with Youth: Seeking youth activities related to arts and culture to present at the Cultural Program that will tell stories of the fight, the issue of youth and HIV/AIDS.
3. Parade/Rally: The Global Village Big Parade will be held on Wednesday, 14 July 2004. Issues and voices from youth will be heard with other voices of the community.
4. Youth Volunteer: We need a team of youth volunteers to help organise all the youth activities, from the Youth Forum to small sessions/activities at the Global Village, from logistics to details of publications on youth.
5. Youth Forum: To be held on Sunday, 11 July from 9.00-16.00 before the Conference’s Opening Ceremony, the Youth Forum, run by youth for youth, will give youth delegates the first opportunity to meet, discuss their issues and concerns, plan their participation and celebrate their strengths. It could include an orientation session to give a picture of the Conference and youth opportunities within it.
6. Closing Forum: This symposium will occur on Friday, 16 July, the same day as the Conference’s Closing Ceremony, to conclude what youth has received from the Conference, how the Conference could be more accessible to youth working in the field of HIV, what should be changed or added for the next conference.
7. Opening Ceremony: A film to capture the face of youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS around the world to be made by the face of AIDS projects in collaboration with young Thai filmmakers.
8. Program Sessions, Skills Building and Satellite Meetings: Running both in the main Conference program and Satellite Meetings, the sessions dedicated for youth. Details to be announced.
9. Fundraising for Scholarship: This project aims to enable disadvantaged young people from all over the world to attend the Conference. Scholarships will be allocated not only to youth from low to medium income countries but also to those from high income countries whose chance to participate the Conference without financial support is very slim. The scholarship will be awarded by the Youth Committee. Click the link below to download the Youth Scholarship Application Form.
