Bangladesh
Anisul Islam Hero

Hero’s performance focuses on the issue of male sexuality and the struggle of PHAs in Bangladesh. Hero will perform on 12 July 11:30am-1pm at the NGO Booth, 13 July noon-1pm in the Global Village and 14 July 4:45-5pm in the Global Village and 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall.

Burma
Peace Warriors

This newly formed band debuted at the Water Festival 2004 in Mae Sod. Living in difficult and different situations, the Burmese musicians try to find space to play together as much as possible. Peace Warriors’ lead singer Mun Awng (aka Dennis) is the ‘Bob Dylan’ of Burma and released four records and performed concerts in Burma before leaving the country in 1988. He still performs for Burmese migrant communities, refugees and exiled activists around the world. Peace Warriors play acoustic guitars and flute. Peace Warriors will play 10 July 1-5pm at the Film Festival Warmer outside Lido Cinema in Siam Square, 12 July 6pm at the Film Festival Opening at Scala Cinema in Siam Square, 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall, 16 July 2pm at the Community Party, Global Village.

Cambodia
Chath PierSath

In ‘Face of AIDS’ Chath’s paintings focus on the situation in Cambodia. The human spirit and our desire to cling to life are portrayed in his art. A Khmer-American artist, Chath’s abstract view of AIDS reveals the social, economic and cultural consequences and costs, along with the harsh reality of victim experience. Charth’s art is exhibited at the FCCT (Penthouse Fl. Maneeya Plaza) and at the Queens Gallery (Ratchadamnern Rd) in the Living Art exhibition (1-29 July).

Cheng Daravuth – paintings, photography, posters and T-shirts
Action IEC, Daravuth’s organisation produces materials for information, education and communication on HIV/AIDS, including prevention, care and support and anti-stigma. Culture and arts are important to Cambodian people and addressing the realities of life through cultural tools is an effective way to touch hearts and minds. There will be a photo exhibition, posters, T-shirts and other materials available at Action IEC’s corner in the Exhibition Centre, Hall 4/F. Cheng will speak on the panel on ‘HIV Edu-tainment’ at Goethe Institut 15 July 7pm.

Leng Sothea, Khana, CDRCP – music
Easy-listening karaoke tunes with heartfelt words effectively connect Leng with audiences. Through music, information about HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support, as well as personal stories of the lives of PHAs are shared on recorded CDs.

Nicholas Lainez – photography
When Nicholas was working on a story about AIDS and sexual exploitation in Phnom Penh in 2002, photographing a transvestite PHA for several months, he was told, “I let you make photos of me because I’ll die soon. And I want my life useful for others. Please, make my story and show to the rest of the world what we must endure.” This experience convinced Nicholas to continue investigating the extreme situations that people must face in what should be a developed and modern world. Nicholas’ photos can also be seen at the Hualumpong Train Station (Rama 4 Rd) Fashion Mart event on 9 July 3-9pm and in the Photojournalism and HIV Forum, 13 July 2-4pm Room 12.

Sovanna Phum (Sabaek Motium) – shadow puppet
Sovanna Phum encourages the preservation and revival of traditional Khmer performing arts as well as contemporary artistic expression and new creations. As Cambodia has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in Southeast Asia, high illiteracy and limited access to information, traditional shadow puppet performances are adapted to effectively relay messages on AIDS prevention, while being a highly entertaining cultural medium. They will perform 14 July 11:30-1pm at the NGO Booth and 15 July noon-1pm in the Global Village

UNICEF/ UNESCO Phnom Penh (Fabrice Laurentin) – self-portraits
Thirty unique and colourful life-sized self-portraits convey the voices of young PHAs and stories about young people’s lives and the HIV/AIDS messages they want to address. The aim is to reduce discrimination towards PHAs through free expression and art. Find the figures in the Convention Centre in front of Hall 9. Representatives will speak at the Goethe Institut ‘HIV Edu-tainment’ discussions on 15 July 7pm.

• China
Positive Art Workshop (Jose Abad Lorente & Dong Chang)
– photography, t-shirts
Positive Art Workshop is a project for people living with HIV/AIDS in China based at You’, a hospital in Beijing. The art works are from marginalised HIV positive groups in Central China. In this region, PHAs are isolated and don’t have many chances to talk freely about AIDS related issues and personal issues. The workshop gives PHAs opportunities to tell their stories, express how they feel, create new links and find ways to build better understanding. “Positive Art Workshop, China” is displayed at the Exhibition Centre in Hall 2 opposite C.

India
Indian Institute of Young Inspirers (Manish Kumar)
– games and magic show
The team from the Indian Institute of Young Inspirers uses magic and games in innovative ways to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS. Manish will be doing his games in the Exhibition Centre Hall 1/B and 9 July 3-9pm at Hualumpong Train Station, 10 July 1-5pm outside Lido Cinema, 12 July noon-1pm Hall 6, 13 July noon-1pm along hallways, 14 July noon-1pm in the Global Village, 15 July noon-1pm in the Global Village and 17 July 2-5pm at Goethe Institut for ‘Children’s Day’.

Sonata Foundation (Pranay Dutta and Dilip Rozario) - song
Traditional Indian folk music is used to educate people about HIV/AIDS, risky behaviour and preventive measures. These songs have been well received by people in the rural communities of India. Sonata performances will be on 12 July 11:30am-1pm at the NGO Booth and 13 July 11:30-1pm at the NGO Booth.

Roxanne Nadeau – poetry
Roxanne is a sex worker, writer and human rights activist based in India. Her poetry communicates the direct effects of criminalisation, stigma, discrimination of sex workers and drug users. It refers to the day-to-day struggle to get condoms and needles. ‘My work is not theoretical. It speaks of the real people, of the marginalised people who live with HIV/AIDS.’ Roxanne will share her poems 15 July noon-1pm in Hall 6 and in the Poet’s Meet 4-5:30pm in Room 12.

Sapphire Creations (Sudarchan Chakravorty, Paramita Saha, Debyendu Nath, Nath Das Tarak) – contemporary dance
‘Positive Lives’ is a dance-visual montage inspired by real-life experiences, anecdotes and case histories of PHAs. The project is a tribute to those who dare to say ‘YES!’ to life. It highlights the courage and strength of PHAs who brave the stigma, pain, loneliness and frustration to emerge victorious in life. Sapphire will perform 10 July 6pm at Goethe Institut, 12 July 11:30am-1pm at the NGO Booth, 13 July noon-1pm in the Global Village, 14 July noon-1pm in Hall 6, 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall and 15 July 5:30-7:30pm in Room 12.

Kuthandavar-aravan Transgender Festival in Tamil Nadu (Shailza Taneja) UNAIDS India
In the Kuthandavar-aravan festival, which takes place in Tamil Nadu every year, transgenders from all over India celebrate their identity. This exhibition ‘Aravan’ of 30 photographs with text offers interesting perspectives and is on show at Coffee Society, 12 Silom Road during 5-16 July. The Opening is 5 July 7pm.

Indonesia
Gaya Nusantara Foundation (Ivan Cakep)
– dance
‘Masking-Unmasking: A Celebration of Life’ is a fine example of traditional Indonesian dance. Through this age-old popular from of entertainment and learning entertainment, messages about HIV/AIDS are shared. Gaya Nusantara will perform 10 July 6pm at the Goethe Institut ‘Com.passion’ Opening, 12 July 5:30-6pm in the Global Village, 13 July noon-1pm in Hall 6 and 14 July noon-1pm in the Global Village.

Rita Farida - poetry
Rita’s poems are personal expressions and communications with her partner who died of AIDS. ‘Writing poetry really helps me through… life.’ Rita believes that sharing her poetry at the conference will increase the positive energy and add ‘meaning’ to the event. Farida will read poems at the beginning of the Plenary session 12 July 8am and also on 15 July 4-5:30pm at the Poet’s Meet in Room 12 and 5:30-7:30pm in Room 12.

Thailand
Clear Sky Group (Prasert Dechaboon)

Songwriter Prasert is the President of TNP+ in Northern Thailand and he has been continuously writing songs about his life and HIV since he discovered he was HIV positive in the 1980s. Prasert will sing 10 July 6pm at Goethe Institut, 12 July 2-4pm in Global Village 2 and 5:30-6pm on the Global Village stage, 14 July 8-10pm at the AFRICASIA concert at Lumpini Hall and 15 July noon-1pm in the Global Village.

Empower Foundation - exhibition
The ‘Labour Sans Frontier Project’ is a collection of 230 large paper dolls made by migrant sex workers who can’t travel, as they don’t have documentation. The dolls can go places the women can’t go. The women made the dolls to represent themselves at meetings and other events, and as a way to live their dreams - to go the beach, the supermarket or wherever. The dolls can be seen in the Exhibition Centre in the NGO Exhibition space and also at the Hualumpong Train Station (Rama 4 Rd) Fashion Mart event on 9 July 3-9pm.

Gap Fai
This mobile theatre group works with ethnic hill-tribe groups doing HIV education. They perform on the streets, in villages and in many languages. Gup Fai stilt walkers take the messages up to the limit! On 12 July noon-1pm they will be in the Global Village and 4pm at the Hualumpong Train Station, 13 July 2-5pm Global Village 2, 14 and 15 July noon-1pm along the hallway.

Honey Bee Special (Empower Foundation) – street theatre
Honey Bee performs short skits promoting condoms in the red light areas of Bangkok, such as Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy. This group of sex worker actors has become popular through their community work since 1993 and has performed in many local community districts, schools and international conferences. Honey Bee will perform 9 July 3-9pm and 14 July 4pm at Hualumpong Train Station Fashion Mart, 12, 13, 14 and 15 July noon-1pm along the hallways of Impact and 7-9pm at Goethe Institut ‘HIV Edu-tainment’ night.

Life Home Project (Jose Luis Gay/ Sumalee Plukmaidee) -interactive exhibition
The ‘Hands’ project is an innovative way of showing support for PHAs. Individual and unique, hands are symbols of friendship, support, care, union and love. While stigma and injustice may drive people to hide their faces, ‘Hands’ encourages everyone to participate by adding a signed handprint. ‘Hands’ is in the Exhibition Centre, Hall 2/C.

MAP Foundation - photo
MAP (Migrant Assistance Program) in Northern Thailand provides health services, information and education on HIV for ethic and migrant PHAs. For this exhibition, migrant workers have photographed their homes, workplaces, where they get their healthcare services and the places they would love to go - if they had the chance. MAP work is displayed in the Exhibition Centre on the NGO Exhibition Wall (panel 14).

Masaru Goto - photo
Japanese photographer Masaru has been working on HIV/AIDS issues in Cambodia for more than two years. His images have been exhibited in Japan, Thailand and Cambodia. At the conference, he will give a slide presentation “Who Cares?” Masaru’s work can also be seen at the Hualumpong Train Station ‘Fashion Mart’ event on 9 July (3-9pm) and in the Photojournalism and HIV Forum 13 July 2-4pm in Room 12.

Mercy Circus
Kids from the Mercy Centre in Klong Toey will be showing off their juggling and gymnastics tricks in the hallways at the conference, at the Hualumpong Train Station Fashion Mart event (Rama 4 Rd) on 9 July 3-9pm, 10 July 1-5pm outside Lido Cinema, 10 July 6pm at Goethe Institut, 12 July noon-1pm along the hallway, 12 July 6pm at the Film Festival Opening at Scala Cinema, 13 July 4pm at Hualumpong Train Station and also at the Children’s Day at Goethe Institut on 17 July 2-5pm.

New Life (Patchai Chaiyadej) - music
Patchai and his band of three musicians from Sri Saket province used to play under the banner of the ‘HIV Band’, but have recently changed their name. They play popular Thai rock and country songs. ‘New Life’ will play on 9 July 3-9pm Hualumpong Train Station, 10 July 6pm at the Goethe Insitut ‘Com.passion’ Opening, 12 July noon-1pm in the Global Village, and 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall.

Panuwat Mata - dance
From the Thai Yai ethnic group in Mae Hong Son in Northern Thailand, Panuwat is a professional dancer who performs Fon Nok (bird dance). Panuwat will perform 12 July 4-5pm in the Global Village and 7pm at the AIDS Film Festival Opening at Scala Cinema in Siam Square, 13 July 5:30-6pm in the Global Village, 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall, and 15 July 5:30-6pm in the Global Village.

Ratree Yodkaewreung
Ratree is a lead singer in the Clear Sky group from Chiang Mai. She has an exquisite voice and will sing 10 July 6pm at the Opening of ‘Com.passion’ at Goethe Institut and 12 July 6pm at Scala Cinema in Siam Square at the Opening of the 2004 AIDS Film Festival, 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall for the AFRICASIA concert, 15 July noon-1pm in the Global Village.

About Sex Show (Siriporn Sripen EMPOWER Foundation)
Siriporn Sripen, head of the EMPOWER Foundation sex workers outreach project in Nakorn Prathom province has been performing the “About sex show” for several years. A participant in local and international art festivals, Siriporn uses the work to show how the sex show is done, the equipment used, protection devices for razor-blade shows, dart shooting, etc. She said “ sex work is my profession and a-go-go dancing is our art. Our sex show is also our performing art”.

Stardust Singers
Children from the Camillian Social Centre in Rayong have formed the Stardust Choir and are trained by Kittipong Kantakarn, a famous Thai songwriter. Stardust will perform with Shangilia Mtoto Wa Afrika at the conference Opening and Closing ceremonies, at the Opening of the Living Art exhibition on 1 July, 3pm and we hope they can join the Children’s Day at Goethe Institut on 17 July 2-5pm.

Suwannapum Mor Lum
This group presents Mor Lum folk music from Roi Et, in the north-eastern region of Thailand. They will perform 10 July 1-5pm outside the Lido Cinema, 12 July noon-1pm in the Global Village and 2-4pm in Global Village 2, 13 July 11:30-1pm at the NGO Booth, 14 July 8-10pm at Lumpini Hall, 15 July noon-1pm in the Global Village and 7pm at the Goethe Institut ‘HIV Edu-tainment’ evening.

We Understand Group – painting exhibition
HIV positive children exhibit their paintings in the exhibition ‘My Life’. They are trained by young artist Dimpa Jeewan and supported by UNICEF and AIDSACCESS Foundation. The children’s art is displayed in the Exhibition Centre in Hall 3/D and it can also be seen at the Hualumpong Train Station (Rama 4 Rd) ‘Fashion Mart’ event on 9 July 3-9pm.
