Thai Ministry of Public Health (Thai MOPH)
The Thailand Ministry of Public Health is a government agency that serves as the national authority on all functions related to health promotion, prevention and control of disease and injury, medical care and rehabilitation and food and drug admini-stration. The ultimate goal of the Ministry is to ensure better health for all.
In line with the above functions, the Ministry of Public Health is committed to providing high quality HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs. Additionally, the Ministry facilitates relevant research activities and fosters the involvement of non-governmental organisations, people living with HIV/AIDS and civil societies in the process of HIV/AIDS program development.
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Thailand, interventions have been launched to tackle the epidemic as well as to provide comprehensive care for people affected by HIV/AIDS. These programs and interventions are instructed by the policy and strategic framework laid out by the National AIDS Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister.
The surveillance of AIDS and HIV infection, prevention of HIV infection from Mother to Child Transmission and the 100 % Condom Program provide just a few examples of successful Ministry led programs and services which have had an impact on the spread and prevention of HIV/AIDS. It is believed that through reducing the rate of infection among commercial sex workers and their clients, the 100 % Condom Program alone has protected millions of Thai people from being infected with this virus during the past decade.
Care and treatment for people affected by HIV/AIDS is also a priority. Currently, antiretroviral drugs are widely accessible to large numbers of HIV/AIDS patients in Thailand and within the next fiscal year, an expansion of this program is planned which will further increase the number of patients who have access to this medication.
The Ministry of Public Health is engaged in the global effort against HIV/AIDS. We are very pleased to be a part of the organisation of the XV International AIDS Conference as this Conference will provide a vital platform for the sharing of knowledge and experience in all fields of HIV/AIDS. We welcome colleagues and delegates from around the world to join us in making this a valuable and successful Conference.
